School Notes:

  • Model Laboratory School is a semi-private laboratory school located on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University, in Richmond, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1906 when EKU was strictly a teacher's college, and is now home to students in grades pre-k through 12. Enrollment is open to the public, but there is a strict limit as to the number of students per grade level along with a fee for tuition. Model consistently ranks among the top 10% of schools in Kentucky in regards to the state's accountablilty testing system (KATS) and provides an opportunity for future teachers from EKU's College of Education to gain valuable experience in a real classroom environment. Since 1960, Model has been housed in the Donovan Building, named for Dr. Herman Lee Donovan the president of the university from 1928 to 1941. The school's mascot was formerly the Rebels, but was changed to the Patriots by the student council in 1973. Model is also the only laboratory school in the state of Kentucky.
  • Model offers a wide variety of athletics including swimming, diving, tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, softball, track, and cross-sountry. Model also has many clubs and organizations available to its students including one of the oldest Key Clubs in the country.
  • Eastern Kentucky University and Model Laboratory School both celebrated their centennial anniversiaries in 2006.
  • Laboratory School Association is NALS: The International Association of Laboratory and University Affiliated Schools.
