Sam Markley of Danielson is known throughout Eastern Connecticut for his involvement with athletics on a variety of levels. As a young man growing up, he was a three sport standout at Killingly High School. In 1974, he was the captain of the Redmen baseball team and named an all-state American Legion player. It was recently reported here that Killingly High School basketball coach Scott Derosier was diagnosed with a serious medical condition. Coach Jim Greenhalgh, who died earlier this year, was noted for his exploits as an athlete, a coach and as a great handler of young men. During his tenure as a teacher, coach and guidance counselor at Putnam High School he positively influenced many young men and women in shaping their futures.
