The Minnesota Elementary School Principals' Association has named Gideon Pond Elementary School in Burnsville a School of Excellence. Since the School of Excellence program was launched in 1986, 135 schools have earned the honor. More than half of all Waukegan District 60 students became the new kids in school last week under the district's new neighborhood schools initiative. Dequan Gwinn, 9, attended Greenwood Elementary for the past four years, but this year, he's a newbie fourth-grader at Oakdale School, which is around the corner from his home.
