JASPER - Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, observances began in Jasper at 9:30 a.m. with a program at the Newton County Nursing Home. At 11 a.m. there was a gathering at the county’s war memorial on the courthouse lawn. Despite making $549,000 in budget cuts, the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education decided to spare the eliminations of preschool and elementary library instructional assistants at its meeting Monday night. Alpena High School students saluted 43 veterans for their service to the country at the school's annual Veterans Day assembly Wednesday. Alpena Public Schools Finance Committee recommended the board of education spare kids and classrooms from the mid-year cuts the board will be considering at its Nov. 23 meeting. Because of cuts the state has made to its school aid fund, the district is facing up to a $292 reduction per pupil and the board will have to make a decision as to how much they want to cut this year. - Alpena ranks second in state in algebra (Harrison Daily Times)

Seventeen-year-old Alpena High School senior Joshua Root is leaving his mark on Alpena. Actually, 14 of them. Root placed the last of 14 posts along the city's bi-path on Thursday, completing the elbow grease portion of his application for an Eagle Scout merit badge. A former Alpena resident and military veteran received the French Legion of Honor medal in May for helping to liberate the country in World War II. Lamar Advertising owns as many as 40 large billboards in the Alpena area and leases them to local businesses to utilize as advertising tools. The Northern Lights Arena has a new manager and he's someone with ties to the community. Jeffrey Gilmet was introduced Monday as the new NLA manager by Multi-Purpose Arena Coaltion Chairman Bill Peterson. Gilmet will take over for Bob Krafft, who announced earlier this year that he would be retiring. After 13 years of hard work and dedication nearly 300 students from Alpena High School received their diplomas in the AHS gymnasium Sunday afternoon. It was a day marked with an emphasis on taking action. Red, white and blue were the colors of the day as Alpena area residents gathered Monday to remember military personnel who had fallen in name of freedom. The American Veterans Post 2497 organized this year's Memorial Day ceremonies in Alpena. The first ceremony began at 9:30 a.m.
