NEWBURYPORT and mdash; A 63-year-old retired Haverhill police officer was struck and killed by a commuter train at the MBTA station Saturday afternoon. Richard E. Witkiewicz suffered head trauma after he was hit by a train that was arriving at the Newburyport station at 5:32 p.m., according to Steve O'Connell, spokesman for District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. The Lamplighter wishes to thank all the Gazette readers who have passed along get-well thoughts for writer and historian Barney Gallagher, who continues to recuperate from heart surgery. Barney is back in Haverhill, at Penacook Place, where he is receiving short visits from friends and fans. School Committee member Kerry Fitzgerald notified friends and supporters over the weekend that she will end her campaign for School Committee. Fitzgerald, who finished last among the six candidates to move on from the preliminary election, said in a letter distributed by e-mail that she has decided to devote all her time to her family and career.
