    Empty Bowls, a fund-raiser for the Interfaith Food Bank, will feature soups from various restaurants along with bowl hand-crafted by local students. The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road.

    As conclusive signs of divine approval, claps of thunder greeted runners crossing the finish line in last Saturday's 36th running of the Jug and Rose Race. The 7.7-mile course, down Sutter Creek Volcano Road from the tiny town of Volcano to the park on Sutter Creek built by the Lions Club, was traversed by many dozens of racers aged 11 to more than 80.

    The 37th Annual Jug and Rose run and walk from the restaurant in Volcano now called Humble Pies down the Sutter Creek-Volcano Road 7.7 miles to the park on the creek. All runners aspiring to be on the Amador High School Cross Country team, some pictured shirtless on the right, will be in the race.

    Amador at Golden Sierra in Garden Valley at 7:30 p.m. This is a rematch of last year's season opener and could be a dandy. The two teams played a thriller in Sutter Creek last year, with the Herd carrying a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, only to lose 21-14.

    The Amador High School pool is at 330 Spanish St. Pool hours are Monday through Friday from 1 to 9 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 6 p.m. The daily gate admission is $2 for 12 years and younger, $2.75 for ages 13 to 54, $2 for seniors aged 55 and older and evening swim is $1. Monthly and season passes are available at the pool and city hall.

    Instruction in the fundamentals of soccer for kids aged 2 to 12 will be offered at Howard Park in Ione on Mondays, from June 8 to July 27, in a non-competitive, age-appropriate format. Classes meet once a week and are taught by professional staff in the Kidz Love Soccer Method.
