    GLOVERSVILLE - The story of a young Japanese girl who tried to fold 1,000 paper cranes, an accomplishment said to grant the folder one wish, inspired Gloversville Middle School sixth-grader Alex Bielli to make a wish of her own. According to the book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes," the Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki, died before she could finish.

    GLOVERSVILLE - The city may have $25,000 to $30,000 left over from a City Hall repair project low bid approved Tuesday night by the Common Council. The city may be able to roll the money into a project to fix the leaky roof at the city fire station. That assessment came from city Finance Commissioner Bruce VanGenderen, who briefed the council on bids during its meeting at City Hall.

    GLOVERSVILLE - The Gloversville Middle School has been removed from the state Schools in Need of Improvement list, a development that will free up about $100,000 in Title I funding, officials said Tuesday. The state Department of Education recently completed report cards for districts for the 2007-08 school year. Gloversville Middle School had been on the In Need of Improvement list.

    GLOVERSVILLE - Mayfield eighth-grader Thomas Steele could be considered a local phenomenon. And he can spell it, too. Steele on Monday won his third Fulton County Spelling Bee after spelling the word correctly, concluding 12 rounds of competitive spelling against 49 other Fulton County students. His next stop will be Washington, D.C., where he'll compete in the national spelling bee.

    For April Gaydos of Perth, being knocked out in the first round of the Scripp's National Spelling Bee competition last year in Washington, D.C. was a blessing in disguise. "Now we have time to see things," she said, about her reaction last year. Last year's local winner is a finalist again in the 17th annual Fulton County Spelling Bee sponsored by The Leader-Herald.
