    The Calabasas Cheetahs Youth Cross Country team will have sign-ups and first practice at 5:45 p.m. Fri. July 31 on the upper field at Calabasas High School, 22855 W. Mulholland Hwy. Children ages 5 to 15 will compete in seven cross country meets with other teams around the valley.

    Four local students joined the list of 2,000 additional names added to this year's National Merit Scholarship winners. The final group of winners brings to approximately 8,300 the number of nationwide scholarship recipients. They received some $36 million in National Merit Scholarships.

    Last Thursday my daughter graduated from Calabasas High School. Her proud parents, grandmothers, and other extended family were there to cheer her own. This grand event ended a long four years of tears, and cheers, but mostly success.

    The city of Calabasas will host the community's annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at Calabasas High School. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the fireworks show begins at 9 p.m. The family-oriented event will feature the band Jack Mack and the Heart Attack and a free family fun zone with balloon artist, rides and games.

    After several members of the Calabasas High School baseball team were suspended in March for hazing new team members, coach Ed Edsall decided to use the incident to teach the boys a lesson in compassion. Edsall arranged for the team to play a game of baseball with the Challenge Team in Simi Valley.

    Calabasas High School was designated a 2009 California Distinguished School for many reasons, including its student support and math peer tutoring programs.
