Gifford Street High School students are giving a failing grade to the water that comes out of the school's drinking fountains. Student council President Kathryn Garcia says the water is "discolored and tastes of metal." After 14 years of declining statistics, the Centers for Disease Control reports the numbers are once more on the rise with a 3 percent increase in 2006. More encouraging is the data from Kane County which shows a slight decrease. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, there were 742, or 8.8 percent of total births, in Kane. That rate has declined from 11.2 percent in 1997.
