School Reviews

4   8/26/2019
My child has attended Suncrest Elementary for a few years now. Under the leadership of Mrs. Hines, the former principal, I feel like the school as a whole was more cohesive and organized compared to the new principal. While the school tends to report good test scores, I fear the focus on test scores overrides the importance of valuing each child''s progress and development, since school is important for social/emotional development, and educational achievement beyond test scores as well. Overall, the teachers we have experienced have been mostly all caring, supportive and wonderful, with the exception of my child's 2nd-grade teacher. My child has special needs, and the teacher, despite her further degree in special education, didn''t help them thrive or succeed but instead seemed to exacerbate the difficulties my child had. Once my child was out of Mrs. Wilson''s classroom, it''s as if they became a whole new person. Despite this one problematic employee, it seems everyone at every level seems to genuinely care about the children at school, and opportunities to get involved in community activities are plentiful, as are extracurricular clubs like Lego Robotics, and Girls on the Run (?). They have a well-thought-out school design and pick up/drop off system. I would hate to say one bad apple spoils the whole bunch, but in this instance, my experience with a bad teacher was enough to warn other parents if they have to make a decision of where to send their child. In the end, you are your child''s biggest advocate and don''t assume the school necessarily has your child''s best interests at heart, when their own priorities lie in test scores.
