School Notes:
  • Adolfo Camarillo High School is a high school located at 4660 Mission Oaks Boulevard in Camarillo, California. It was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 1996 and in 2009 and a National Blue Ribbon School in 1998. It is part of the Oxnard Union High School District. The land was purchased for the school by Adolfo Camarillo for the construction of a high school. Its current principal is Glenn Lipman.
  • History
  • ACHS was established in 1956 on land donated by Adolfo Camarillo. In 2006, the school celebrated its 50th year anniversary; in attendance were students from 1956.
  • The school has undergone recent refurbishments, including a new approx. 6,000 capacity football/soccer stadium, as well as new baseball and softball fields. The landmark stadium steps which feature a large blue scorpion can be seen from the 101 freeway.
  • ACHS was one of the first High Schools in California to have a website representing the school. ACHS.org launched on April 6, 1995. The site averages approx 20,000 hits per day, and holds two awards from the Scripps Howard Star Internet Awards. Students from every class visit the site's extensive Alumni pages. As of 2002, ACHS.org is no longer the official school/district approved/sponsored website. As of 2005 it was maintained by private parties not affiliated with the school. It is unknown if the site is actively updated as of 2007.
  • Academics
  • Camarillo High School students' Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores have ranked consistently among the highest in Ventura County, 29%. Test scores indicate that Camarillo's students also continue to rank well above the state and national averages. [1]
  • Athletics
  • Mascot
  • ACHS teams are known as the Scorpions, named after the F-89 Scorpion fighter aircraft based out of the former Oxnard Air Force Base, now Camarillo Airport. The mascot is "Scorpy" the Scorpion.
  • School songs
  • The Alma Mater is sung to the tune of Far Above Cayuga's Waters, from Cornell University. In the heart of California's Golden sun and dew Proudly stands the school we honor, Glorious to view. Ever in our hearts she'll linger, Memories never die. Hail to thee our school so loyal, CAMARILLO HIGH!
  • The school fight song is Wave the Flag (for Old Chicago), the University of Chicago fight song.
  • Athletes
  • ACHS has also produced star athletes, including the first overall pick of the 2003 MLB Draft, Delmon Young, USA Olympic GOLD Medalist Jessica Mendoza, and multi-sport collegiate star Joe Borchard.
  • The Scorpions have two CIF-SS champion football teams in their history. In 1984, the Camarillo Scorpions football team won the CIF Southern Section championship in the Los Angeles Coliseum over Ventura High School. In 1996, ACHS beat Notre Dame High School of Sherman Oaks, and current Oakland Raider Justin Fargas 20-16.
  • In 2007, Camarillo's Softball team was ranked second in California and the country. The team has also made it to the semi-final round of CIF Southern Section Div. I from 2001-2006. Also in 2007, the Camarillo Baseball team was runner up in CIF Div. II.
  • Camarillo's nearest rival school is Rio Mesa High School, since students from the city of Camarillo attend both schools. Over the years, the attendance dividing line has shifted from Rosewood Avenue, to Carmen Drive in 1983, and eventually to the current north/south line along Arneill Road. Before Rio Mesa High School was built, Camarillo had a rivalry with Oxnard High School and Thousand Oaks High School. Students from the Las Colinas Middle School, the now-closed Los Altos Middle School, and additional students from Monte Vista Middle School compose the majority of students that enter Adolfo Camarillo High School.
  • Publications
  • The school yearbook is El Alacran (The Scorpion). The school newspaper is The Stinger. There is also an art/culture magazine called the Veritas. In December 2007 ACHS launched an online version of the Stinger called " insideACHS.com" This newly created site is called "Scorpion Media" and is a joint venture between the student newspaper and video production.
