  • Leland High School is a public high school located in the Almaden Valley in San Jose, California, USA in the San Jose Unified School District. Leland is well known for its nationally ranked Speech and Debate team.
  • Awards and recognition
  • During the 2004-05 school year, Leland High School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education, the highest award an American school can receive.
  • In 2002, Leland received a clear six year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
  • In 2006, 413 Leland students took a total of 877 Advanced Placement tests. 79% of the Placement scores were three or above, with 29% scoring a five. The school average score was a 3.94, while 177 students qualified as AP Scholars.
  • Notable Extra-curricular activities
  • Speech and Debate - Leland's Speech and Debate team is ranked second in the nation by the National Forensic League and has over 300 members. Students compete in tournaments on the local level, as well as travel to other locations for invitationals, state tournaments, and national tournaments.
  • Robotics - Team 604, also known as Quixilver, has participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Team membership numbers at roughly forty members. Since the team was restarted in 2005, the team has been rather successful, winning the 2005 Pacific Northwest Regional, the Chairman's Award at the 2007, 2008 Silicon Valley Regional, and the 2008 CalGames Competition.
  • EPACT- The Environmental Protection Agency of California Teens (founded by Leland graduates Yong Ra, Darwin Moosavi, and Alex Powell) is the environmental club of Leland. It has set up a recycling program at Leland earns over $2,000 a year, funding the club's activities and projects including the newly constructed garden on campus.
  • Soccer - Coached by Dave Gold, Leland Soccer set a national and are current holders of the state record for 61 consecutive wins from 1987-1990.
  • Water Polo - Coached by Mike Monsees and Eric Rise, Leland Water Polo has had outstanding records and results despite meager funding and aging facilities. The girls team placed 2nd Place in League Championships fall of 2007 with a 2nd place CCS finish and in 2008 placed first in League Championships and played in the semifinals in CCS.
  • Track & Field – Leland’s track and field team is taught by Jerry Rose, and is considered a spring sport. The Chargers compete in the Mt. Hamilton Division, after successfully moving up from the Santa Teresa Division in the spring of 2008. The team consists of many athletes from other sports to stay in shape during their off season. There are over 100 male and female runners on the varsity team ranging from freshmen to seniors, as there are not enough to make a separate junior varsity team. This team participates in CCS (otherwise known as Central Coast Section). The female Chargers took home the CCS Track championship in May 2009.
  • Peer Tutoring - Run by Social Science teacher, Megan Bergantz. It is a fully accredited high school tutor program. The program consists of student tutors ranging from 9th to 12th grades. To become a peer tutor, a student must first fill out an application and attend training sessions. In order to tutor in a certain subject, he or she must have previously completed the course with an A. Tutors have the opportunity to achieve the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Certificate Level 1 and the Master Tutor Award. For the CRLA Level 1 Award, a student must tutor for at least 25 hours. For the Master Tutor Award, 50 hours of tutoring must be completed (an additional 25 hours after receiving the Level 1 Award) as well as a set of additional tutoring videos. This program is completely free to Leland High students who need extra assistance in a particular subject or subjects. A prospective tutee simply fills out a request form and waits for a tutor who specializes in that subject to contact him. The tutoring happens on campus before school, during lunch or after school. Popular tutoring places are the library, the peer tutoring room and the Homework Center.

  • Gay Brasher - Award-winning forensics coach who has been inducted into the National Forensic League Hall of Fame.
  • Jerry Hsu - professional skateboarder
  • Brent Jones - Former American football player and Pro Bowl tight end for the San Francisco 49ers.
  • Dan Lloyd - Former linebacker for the New York Giants.
  • Joe Murray - Creator of TV animated series Rocko's Modern Life and Camp Lazlo.
  • Steve Smith - Astronaut, holds all-time second place for cumulative spacewalk time.
  • Pat Tillman - former American football player, notable for turning down a multi-million dollar contract and enlisting as a United States Army Ranger in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks; killed in Afghanistan in 2004 by friendly fire. The football stadium at Leland is named after him, Tillman Stadium. There is a yearly Pat's Run at the track at the stadium.
