  • West High School is a public high school in Torrance, California. The mascot is the Warrior. Because of racial reasons and political correctness, the Warrior Mascot (actual physical character) is no longer used in sporting events.
  • Overview: West High is one of four comprehensive four-year high schools in the Torrance Unified School District, and has an enrollment of 2,100 students. Its certificated faculty includes 90 teachers, four administrators, five counselors, and one library media teacher, with a pupil-teacher staffing ratio of 28 to one. West High has a tradition in sports, and a tradition of academic excellence. The school mascot are the Warriors. The 2006 West High Freshman football team went undefeated, 10-0, and the varsity team went all the way to the CIF finals in which they lost to Domingez high school. Academically speaking, the West High Academic Decathlon team also performs exceptionally well. They are currently on a three-year winning streak for Los Angeles County competition, getting 1st place in the years 2005, 2006, and 2007. The school has a history of doing well in county and state competition.
  • History: West High School opened in September 1962 (45 acres obtained in 1959 for $703,000). Additions in 1963, 1967, 1968, 1974. Reinforced concrete, 240,562 sq. ft., 9 buildings, 92 classrooms. Construction cost: $7,238,000.
  • Achievement: West High School is ranked the top high school in the Torrance Unified School District. It has been named a California Distinguished School four times: in 1984, 1994, 1999 and 2005. West High School was named a Blue Ribbon school (top one hundred in the nation) in 1984.
  • Part of West High's success can be attributed to the student population, which tends to come from an affluent background.
  • Athletics: West High offers: Tennis, Dance, Drill Team, Tall Flags, Cheerleading, Basketball, Soccer, Football, Swim Team, Water Polo, Golf, Track, Cross Country, Baseball, Softball, Wrestling, Volleyball, Surf.
  • Academic Competitions: Academic Decathlon (AcaDec), Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, Forensic Debate.
  • 2006 Football: The 2006 West High Football team has made it to the C.I.F. Southern Section Finals against the Compton Dominguez Dons for the first time since 1986. This Warrior team went 12-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Bay League. Coach Holt became the Daily Breeze Coach of the Year and Junior Runinng Back Brian Bauchman as the Player of the Year.
  • West High Entertainment Unit: The West High Entertainment Unit is one of the most widely traveled musical organizations in the Western United States. They have performed in over 16 foreign countries and travel to Europe every four years. In 1992, the Unit performed in Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In 1996, they performed in England, Ireland and Scotland. These musical ambassadors received the honor of being the lead band in the Festival Cavalcade Parade in Edinburgh, Scotland, the largest parade in Europe. Most recently, the band traveled to Greece, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic in the summer of 2001.
  • This group has performed for the National Football League in Europe as well as in the United States, and was selected as the first official band for the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles. The Entertainment Unit receives consistent top honors at competitions throughout Southern California, and enjoys a renowned reputation for excellence both nationally and internationally. In 1993, they performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in New York City, and on January 1, 1995, they marked their fourth appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. West High sponsors the South Bay Invitational Field Tournament at El Camino College.
