School Notes:
  • Chaparral High School is a public high school located in Parker, Colorado, United States. It is a part of Douglas County School District RE-1. It is named after the shrubland biome chaparral.
  • The school is notable in Colorado for how it came to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) unit. Chaparral student Cody Smith died in 2002 after his heart stopped while in gym class, spurring his parents to raise funds to acquire AED units for other Douglas County schools.
  • Extracurricular Activities: The Chaparral marching band has a strong history in competition under the direction of Orlando Otis. The band has appeared in the Hollywood Christmas Parade.
  • The school has hosted an annual jazz festival, the Chapparal High School High Plains Jazz Festival, since 1996.
  • Other activities include, but are not limited to, the five vocal strong choirs directed by Mr. Jerry Vander Does. The choirs sing well-known classical and traditional pieces. Each performance has a theme, including Broadway, Classical and Holiday. Entrance is free.
  • Student Government is an opportunity for leadership, helping to better the school community through active involvement, and providing students an opportunity to serve in a leadership position. The 2006 student body president is Steven Busch and the advisor is Mr. Craig Bowman.
