School Notes:
  • Eastside High School is a public school in East Gainesville, FL, USA. It was opened in 1970 and is managed by the Alachua County School District. According to its 2008 No Child Left Behind Report, 42.6 percent of students classify as "economically disadvantaged." That is slightly lower than both the district and the state. As of 2007, the school has a student population of approximately 2300 and is home to two magnet programs: the Institute of Culinary Arts and the area's only International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
  • Management
  • The school has been served by nine principals:
  • John Dukes
  • May Isler
  • Dr. Ron Nelson
  • Dr. Robert Schenck
  • Bill Herschleb
  • Sandra Hollinger
  • Michael Thorne
  • Jeff Charbonnet (current)
  • Reputation
  • Eastside is consistently ranked among the top 50 of America's worst high schools, and was ranked fourth in 2005.
  • The many accolades Eastside receives are mainly due to its IB program. It attracts some of the most academically gifted students in the Alachua County area, including children of international professors at the University of Florida. It is currently facing funding problems due to severe budget cuts which has limited the resource usage for academics resulting in dissatisfaction amongst parents and teachers. Possibly as a result of the budget cuts, in recent years, there has been a small exodus of teachers from the International Baccalaureate program. Consequently, the program has sustained a steady decline in quality of education within the IB program. Although the Eastside IB program has sustained an excellent history and English literature program, the science and mathematics programs have noticeably declined in quality.
  • Comparatively, in 2008 only 15 percent of African-American met NCLB standards for adequate progress in Reading, as opposed to 89 percent of Caucasian students and 44 percent of all students.
  • In 2004, Eastside's Institute of Culinary Arts was ranked first in the state of Florida and second in the United States.
  • Awards and competitions
  • The women's basketball team placed second in the state in 2004-2005, and the men's basketball team was first in state in the 2005-2006 season. The women's volleyball team was also district champions in 2007-2008.
  • Eastside had a robotics team that competed internationally in the FIRST Robotics Competition and was in operation from 2000-2007.
  • Eastside placed first in le Congrès de la Culture Francaise en Floride (French language competition) thirty times since 1991, including 2008, because it has one of the best french programs in the nation.
  • The Eastside High School Marching Rams ("It's Showtime") were ranked as the number one show band in its class at the Florida State Competition in 2004 and 2005.
  • In 2007, the Eastside team at the Florida State Spanish Conference won the Florida state championship.
