School Notes:
  • Gateway High School is located in Kissimmee, Florida. It is home to Osceola County's International Baccalaureate Program and is also the site for one of the largest Performing Arts Centers in the county. The mission of Gateway High School is to enhance the students' academic, artistic, social, and technological skills to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly diverse society.
  • History: A new school opened in Osceola County, the third school in this county with the first female principal, Dorothy Davis. The year was 1986. At first it was known as school DD. More than 90 names were suggested for this high school, thus it was narrowed to Silver Spurs High School and Gateway High School. However, county officials and board members decided to call the high school Gateway because they believed that the community should sell itself as a gateway to the world.
  • Students that would be attending this high school chose the school colors. Black and silver were chosen as the colors for Gateway because this color combination had helped the Los Angeles Raiders win. This was a favorite team among students at that time. The school's building was not ready for students in August, 1985; so the classes were held in portables on Osceola High's Campus. the football team used a semi-trailer for their locker room and the girls basketball team had to use the "Cow Palace" for their gym.
  • When the first phase of construction was complete, the faculty and staff moved all the supplies to their new campus in February, 1986; but were not able to hold classes there due to bathroom facilities not ready. So the students met back at OHS's campus for another two weeks. One major problem, the portables were already moved to the new campus. The faculty brainstormed and combined classes together to meet in the remaining few portables; even school buses were used as temporary classrooms for the two weeks.
  • Gateway's student body was composed of students from rival high schools: St. Cloud High School and Osceola High School's overflow. It struggled to become its own for over 10 years but was proud to announce the addition of the International Baccalaureate program in 1997. It is currently the magnet in Osceola County for bright and motivated students.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Gateway High School hosts numerous extracurricular activities. In the 2005-2006 school year, the school is most known for an active International Club, BETA, Drama Division, Debate Club, DECA, Key Club, Spanish National Honor Society, German National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, Senior Class, Junior Class, National Honor Society, Student Government, and Athletics Program. There are also committees in which students, parents, and teachers may voice their opinions such as SAC and STAC.
  • Athletic Teams at Gateway: Football, Cross country running, Track and Field, Swimming, Volleyball, Golf, Tennis, Basketball, Soccer, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Baseball, Softball, Water Polo, Cheerleading.
