After making their mark in regional play, the Lady Chiefs finished as the state AAAAA runner-up under head coach Kelly Audia to round out the season. The team lost to St. Vincent's School in the state championship match and finished 2nd in Class AAAAA. Sequoyah then received a preseason #1 rank for the 2004 season. Volleyball powerhouse Starr's Mill and Sequoyah made it the final match, and the Chiefs lost 3-2, finishing runner-up for the second consecutive year.

They have been the state traditional champions twice since the school opened in 1990. In the 1996 season, behind the individual champions Wyatt Wilkie (112), Shinya Coulter (135), Lonnie Jones (160), and Geoff Jones (189) the team won its first state title in Class AAAA. Just a few seasons later, another brother stepped up to the plate as Justin Wilkie (130) and Leslie Morrow (112) won their individual brackets and led the team to a state championship in AAAA in 1999.
