School Notes:
  • John McEachern High School or McEachern High School is a public high school established in 1908 in Powder Springs, Georgia, USA. It was originally established as the Seventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School. Due to its history, McEachern has an open campus, with its buildings spaced across the property. McEachern is the second largest school in the CCSD, with around 2,500 students, in grades 9-12.
  • History
  • Co-founder of the Georgia Insurance Co., John Newton McEachern expressed great interest in the education of young people. His financial support and his donation of of land enabled the establishment of a new school in Powder Springs. His attempts inspired donations for the school from civil-minded citizens as well. The Seventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School opened in February 1908. The only building on campus was a large two-story academic building made of brick with huge white columns, which had to be rebuilt in 1912 after a great fire. Other buildings were built beside it including girls' dormitories, a Dining Hall, and the Principal's Home. Many farming curricula were offered and the students raised livestock and vegetables, and even made bricks for the buildings. In 1933 the University System of Georgia was established and the Seventh District A&M was closed.
  • In October 1933 the campus reopened as the Macland Consolidated School, teaching children grades 1 through 11. In 1938 the Cobb County Board of Education approved a petition to change the name to John McEachern Schools, due to generous contributions from the McEachern family. By 1975, high enrollment necessitated the movement of grades 1 through 8 to other schools, and the school was renamed John McEachern High School. Since then many new buildings have been added and old ones have been renovated to accommodate the current level of students.
