School Notes:
  • Redan High School, located in the unincorporated city of Redan, Georgia, was established in 1976 by the DeKalb County School System. The school's mascot is the Raider. Both Redan High School and its "twin", Stone Mountain High School, are unusual in architecture, as they both were built without any main windows on the exterior of the building (except for in the main common area). Contrary to popular belief, the lack of windows has nothing to do with trying to prevent students from being distracted, but rather the windowless construction was for energy saving purposes duing the "energy crunch" of the mid-to-late 1970's.
  • Redan High School has a history of excellent sports teams. Varsity football and soccer player, Kevin Butler was a kicker for the Chicago Bears (1985-1995) and Arizona Cardinals (1996-1997). After being drafted from the University of Georgia, he set the rookie scoring record with 144 points during the 1985 NFL season, assisting him team to a championship win in Super Bowl XX.
  • Another example of Redan High's excellence in sports was their Varsity Boys Soccer team which won the 1988 AAAA Division State Finals. One of Redan High's most famous sports alumni, Chris Gardocki, was a member of the 1988 team, as well as Redan's Varsity Football team. After graduating from Redan and attending Clemson University, Chris was recruited for the NFL and has spent time with the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, and the Cleveland Browns. He currently plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was a member of their Super Bowl XL championship team.
  • Lastly is Terance Mathis, yet another Redan Varsity football standout. Terance Mathis (born June 10, 1967, in Detroit, Michigan) was a Pro Bowl wide receiver in the NFL. Mathis attended Redan High School and University of New Mexico, where he played both football and basketball. Drafted in 1990 by the New York Jets, he played the majority of his career with the Atlanta Falcons. He last played in the NFL in 2002 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, then retired in 2004. Currently, he holds the NFL record for the most two-point conversions over a player's career.Redan's baseball program is one of the best in the Southeastern United States. 18 players have been drafted from the program in the past 20 years. The starting second basman for the Cincinnati Reds, Brandon Phillips was a second round pick in 1999. Chris Nelson was a first round pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2004. 70 players have received scholarships in that time. Former coach Greg Goodwin was selected to the Georgia Dugout Hall of Fame in 2000. He currently serves as the Principal, and works as a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The boys and girls track teams have won 3 state titles in the past four years.
