School Notes:
  • Founded in 1853, New Albany High School is the oldest public high school in the state of Indiana. The school has the first student-run FM radio station to be licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. WNAS Radio was opened in 1949. As well students at the school have their own cable TV channel (WNAS TV) since 1980.
  • History: Initially known as Scribner High School, it opened in 1853 as the first high school in New Albany, Indiana. The school was operated on an irregular basis, and closed for years at a time. During part of the Civil War the school building was leased to the federal government, to be used as a hospital for Union soldiers. Continuous operation of a school has occurred since 1864 (though in varying locations). The final current location of the school was established in 1928.
  • Notable alumni: The following is a selective list of notable alumni of New Albany High School mainly taken from a full length list from the school. William Vaughn Moody - C/O 1885 - dramatist and poet.
  • Sherman Minton - C/O 1910 - United States Senator and an associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • Billy Herman - C/O ???? - Hall of Fame Major League Baseball player during the 1930s and 1940s.
  • Fuzzy Zoeller - C/O 1970 - Golfer who won multiple PGA Tours, including The Masters in 1979.
  • Rob Conway - C/O 1990 - Professional Wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment WWE.
  • Mike Wolfe - C/O 1994 - Pro Bowler on the PBA Tour, winner of the Earl Anthony Classic.
  • Major Dodge- C/O 1996- Actor/Model.
  • Notable faculty: Edwin Hubble - Astronomer and science teacher, after whom the Hubble Space Telescope was named.
  • Radio station: WNAS, 88.1 FM, is the student-run school radio station. It broadcasts to the greater metropolitan area (Louisville). It has been in operation since 1949, and was the first FCC-licensed high-school FM radio station in the United States.
