The Sparkles have gone big time. The cheerleading squad, made upof special needs girls and coached by Pleasant Valley High Schoolcheerleaders, will appear on “ The Oprah Winfrey Show ” Tuesdayduring a broadcast saluting the “most extraordinary people of2009,” said Angela DePaul, a spokeswoman for the show. The showhighlights people and groups previously featured in Peoplemagazine.

Mark Tramontina's father and son both served in the U.S. Marines. Because of their service, he developed a love, respect and compassion for veterans. As a social studies teacher at Pleasant Valley High School, 13 years ago he began coordinating a Veterans Day event at PV. It began in his classroom. The concert will be held on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of Pleasant Valley High School, Route 209, Brodheadsville.
