Southeast High School is one of the largest public high schools in the Wichita area.
History: Beginning in 1957, when the school was first opened, Southeast was run and operated by a Student Advisory Committee, which was composed of students from other high schools and junior high schools, as well as Southeast staff members. The Committee discussed issues dealing with school life such as pep assemblies, student government, colors, symbols, fight song, and alma mater.
Southeast's colors were chosen to be gold and white, for the reason that such colors would show up well at night. Oddly enough, however, the colors usually represented on uniforms and Southeast-related products are black and gold.
Southeast's symbol and mascot is the Golden Buffalo, which is characteristic of the Kansas region. During the selection process, some of the other suggested names were: Golden Bisons, Rangers, Wranglers, Prairie Hawks, and the Golden Raiders.
Academics: In recent years, Southeast has seen a boon in academic interest, resulting in several extra-curricular clubs and organizations being created. Many students at Southeast are members of the National Honor Society, and even more are given local awards like Student of the Month and the Tatanka Award, which is recognition for students who consistently demonstrate performance beyond standard expectations over the course of an entire school year.
Arts: An overwhelming number of students at Southeast are involved in artistic studies, such as instrumentation, singing, acting, dancing, and painting. The Southeast Orchestra is a talented group of young musicians who regularly participate in local festivals, as well as compete in high-level competitions.
Southeast is home to many musical/theater productions, run mostly by student members of the International Thespian Society. Three mainstage shows are performed each year, along with smaller shows that showcase student-written one-acts.
At the end of each school year, Goldust - the combined performance of the enitre artistic student body - acts as a farewell to the senior class. Goldust is comprised of many short skits and musical renditions, often performed strictly by graduating seniors.
Athletics: In the past decade, Southeast has time-and-again proven itself to be a formidable athletic school. In 1998, girls soccer won the Titan Classic. Both girls track and field and boys football and basketball also claimed city league titles in that year. Then, in 1999, boys basketball won the 6A State Basketball tournament. In 2003, boys won state in both swimming and basketball. In the last 40 years, Southeast has won over 100 League Championships and over 40 State Championships in boys competition, and over 40 League Championships and 10 State Championships in girls competition.
Each head coach at Southeast is also a classroom teacher, representing ten different curriculum areas. Combined, those coaches have a total of 320 years of coaching experience.
Southeast offers 20 different sports, the most in the Wichita City League, and all that are sponsored by the state. Last year, 289 boys and 229 girls represented Southeast as members of athletic teams - the most of any school in Wichita.
Notable alumni: Class of 1980: Jeff Smith, All-State running back, 5 seasons in NFL.
Class of 1969: Kirstie Alley, Actress (Cheers, Veronica's Closet).
Class of 1962: Dan Glickman, President and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America as of 2004. United States Secretary of Agriculture under Bill Clinton.
Class of 1962: Gene Inger, Financial Television Pioneer in Los Angeles, New York and Florida, which paved the concept such as CNBC currently retired from television and money management, hosts ingerletter.com financial site.
