McKinley Senior High School, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is located on 800 E. McKinley St. It houses East Baton Rouge Parish's only gifted and talented high school program. The school mascot is a panther and the school colors are royal blue and white.
Brief History of McKinley High School: Hickory Street School was the first educational institute for African-American youth established in 1907 under the leadership of the late Dr. J.M. Frazier, Sr. After six years of operation the institution changed its name to The Baton Rouge Colored High School in 1913 with Dr. Frazier continuing to guide the administration. In the year of 1926, The McKinley Senior High School was erected on the corner of East Boulevard and Louise Street with Dr. Frazier guiding the helm as the inaugural principal of the institution. This enormous feat established The McKinley Senior High School as the first African-American public institution in the history of Louisiana. The McKinley High School continued to function for approximately twenty four (24) years upon which time, the need came for the operation to expand due to increased enrollment henceforth in the year of 1950 McKinley Jr-Sr. High was built on the corner of McCalop and Louise Street making the first institution The McKinley Junior High (later becoming the McKinley Elementary).
During the 1950’s The McKinley High School under the tutelage of Principal A.H. Jackson obtained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1962 under the supervision of Mr. Julius Thomas the present McKinley High School structure was built to enhance its academic foundation as the charter institution. Currently, 2005 EBRP High School Principal of the Year Mr. Armond Brown heads the administration of new McKinley Senior High School leadership.
The school, namely its colors, is referenced in a line in "Full of Dat S***" by platinum-selling local artist Webbie and long-time collaborator & McKinley alumnus Lil Boosie from Webbie's 2005 album Savage Life. The line goes: "You can catch me by the school zone with my McKinley blue on, with a tool on that'll have you, you, you, and you gone."
The school had two Coca Cola Scholar Foundation Finalists one in 2003 (Nicholas Machen) and one in 2006 (Robert Ingram). The selection rate for finalist is less than .5 %
In 2006, a student {Keaira Landry,stage name:K~Switz} of the McKinley Senior High School marching band composed a song entitled "MCK" about the school's band program.The song was featured on the radio on October 5, 2006; you can hear this song at myspace.com/mckband09
Notable former students: Tyrus Thomas- Former LSU Tigers basketball player, now playing for the Chicago Bulls.
Lil Boosie- Rapper.
Keith Smart- Former Indiana Basketball player.
Eddie G. Robinson- Hall of Fame former Grambling Football Coach.
Cleo Fields- Louisiana State Senator and former United States Congressman.
Lars Kestner- Author.
Chris Carter- Author.
