- James Hubert Blake High School is a secondary school located in Silver Spring, an unincorporated section of Montgomery County, Maryland, United States.
- Blake was named after James Hubert Blake, a ragtime musician of the early and mid-20th century. Founded in 1998, Blake High School is a public high school that serves 1,816 students in grades 9-12. Blake offers a signature program in fine arts and humanities. Its mascot is the Bengal and its current principal is Ms. Carole Goodman.
- It is part of the Northeast Consortium, an organization of three area high schools that allow middle schoolers to choose their destination school based on each school's signature program. The other members of the consortium are Springbrook High School and Paint Branch High School.
- When the county established the school in 1998, the namesake James Hubert Blake was chosen over James Maury Henson, the creator of the Muppets television show and graduate of the University of Maryland.
- James Hubert Blake High School actively engages the diverse and inclusive school community with challenging learning opportunities in and beyond the classroom that foster a passion for learning, appreciation for the arts, and productive citizenship.
- Academics
-
Blake High School has a rigorous academic program, including a full range of honors and AP classes. Although the focus of the school is on performance and visual art, the math and science departments offer multiple high level elective classes, and the Social Studies Department offers the most electives of any department outside of the arts. Classes such as Mythology and Ancient World History, Multi-variable Calculus, Creative Writing, and Speech and Debate are offered in addition to the standard course curriculum.
- Blake High School mostly focuses on General Arts. Such classes include music, painting, photography, computer arts, etc. Other academics can change annually, but the required classes for graduation of Montgomery County Public Schools are available.
- Blake High School also offers beginning and advanced journalism classes. The advanced classes produce the monthly newspaper The Blake Beat
- James Hubert Blake High School operates under an academy structure. A Federal Grant has made it possible for Blake to join the growing national education movement toward organizing large high schools into Smaller Learning Communities (SLC), referred to as Academies. This federal initiative has proven successful in preparing students for real world careers and entry into rigorous post-secondary education. Academies promote connections among students and teachers, build teamwork and leadership skills, guide students in course selection, encourage academic challenge through rigorous courses, and prepare students for future careers through relevant course content and connections to the community and workplace.
- The Blake Academy Programs incorporate three themes, often referred to as the new 3 R’s of high school education--rigor, relevance, and relationship:
- RIGOR requires increasing the academic challenges of students in the classroom and setting high standards of achievement for all students.RELEVANCE means connecting what students study with post-secondary education and the world of work.RELATIONSHIP refers to building connections among students and adult mentors to make education a more personal experience.
- Students begin the Blake program in ninth grade as members of the Freshman Academy. Teams of students share core teachers and receive academic support to help them make a successful transition to high school. Through our weekly Academy Period structure of smaller learning communities, students determine skills and interests that align with future career areas and are introduced to the Blake Career Academy themes. During ninth grade and beyond, students select an academy affiliation for their advisory group and a Career Academy pathway to guide their upper class course selection. Students and parents make the academy choice, with guidance from teachers and counselors. Students are placed in Academy Period sections based on their academy and pathway choices. The pathways guide students in selecting courses that support their personal and academic goals. Students who complete a pathway and a culminating “capstone” experience receive an Academy certificate.
- The honors program at Blake High School is designed to provide instructional challenges for academically talented and motivated students. The program consists of honors courses, advanced level courses, and Advanced Placement courses. Honors level courses are offered in English, foreign language, mathematics, science and social studies. Advanced Placement courses are offered in twenty-two subject areas. In 2004, over 400 students took Advanced Placement examinations, consisting of nearly 700 exams. 76% of the students who took exams received a national qualifying score of 3, 4 or 5.
