A new University of Arkansas study puts Harrison Middle School and Valley Springs Middle School among Arkansas’ top 20 middle schools and Skyline Heights Elementary School at Harrison among the top 20 Arkansas elementary schools for combined math and literacy scores on tests given last spring.

It’s not unusual for a teacher to receive a Christmas gift from one of her students. It is unusual when that student is 73 years old. Karen Shrum thought back to the crocheted Christmas ornaments given to her by her septuagenarian student.

Matthew Piper is a 32-year-old teacher at Skyline Heights Elementary School who hasn’t forgotten his heritage. “Aunt Della (Lanter) lives on Orchard Point Road on Gaither Mountain,” he says. Her husband died in 1990.
