Test scores improved for the most part in the Marshall County School District, but with a new state accountability formula, challenges await. “Overall, our scores went up,” said Jerry Moore, instructional services director with the district, “but with this new formula they needed to be much higher.

Fred Holland and Sterling Brown, sponsors of the Byhalia High Future Farmers of America group, have plenty to be proud of this year. Their students are the first in the high school’s history or from Marshall County to win state competition and go to the national level with their projects.

He’s 56 and has spent 38 years in the construction business in Memphis. Just weeks ago he took over the position of public works director for the town of Byhalia, following the retirement of William Rose.

Scooter Dempsey is leaving his mayor’s seat in Byhalia and turning it over to a good friend. Dempsey, after two years as alderman and the past eight as mayor, did not seek reelection. Phil Malone ran unopposed for the town’s top spot. He will be sworn in July 6.
