- Cibola High School is an Albuquerque Public School high school, located at 1510 Ellison Drive on the westside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was overcrowded as of 2006, and was the largest public high school in the state of New Mexico with more than 3000 students. This changed in the Fall of 2007 with the opening of Volcano Vista High School. Volcano Vista opened to just freshmen in 2007 taking a portion of Cibola's incoming freshman class. The opening of Volcano Vista reduced Cibola's size further in the 2008-09 school year when they added sophomore and junior students to Volcano Vista High School. The current principal is Elena Salazar. Salazar replaced former principal Grace Brown who took a job with Los Alamos High School in July 2007. In the summer of 2008, Cibola's concourse went under a 7 million dollar face lift, along with a new cafeteria and entry way. Construction lasted from May 2008, running into the new school year, until December when Cibola celebrated with a grand opening.
- Music
-
Cibola has a large number of official and unofficial musical groups. The school sponsors a chorus, a band, and a guitar program. Many of these groups turn out noted players and musicians.
- Cibola also is home to many up and coming local bands. The most well known are My Horse is Dead,The Knights of The Wasteland, and Inbred. It is also home to an outstanding band called the DZE (Davis Zarchek Experience)
- Sports and Activities
-
Cibola has a notable football program, which in 2006 went 10-3, a school record, and made it to the semi-finals where they defeated the Alamogordo Tigers. In 2006, their JV and freshmen football teams ended their schedules undefeated as the city champs. Cibola had not gotten to the semi-finals since 1985.
- Cibola's cross-country team won the title of 5A state champions in the fall of 2008. It was the first time in the school's history. The team then went on to the Nike Southwest Regional Championships to win third place next to Albuquerque Academy (first) and a team from Utah (second).
- Cibola High School is also home to a noted mock trial team. Originally starting in the late 80's, Cibola has grown to become competitors in their State and Regional divisions. Since taking over as coaches, Mr. Marvin Romero and Mr. David Berlin have helped their team reach the National Championships twice where they placed 25th and 13th(the highest place by any APS school at that time). In the summer of 2007, the mock trial’s A-Team went to the Empire City Invitational in New York where they not only won several outstanding attorney and witness awards, but placed first in the competition as well. The mock trial team also had an outstanding run in 2008, losing only once in the Regional competition, getting 2nd place and moving on to the State competition. At State, they managed to take all 10 ballots in the first two rounds putting them into the championship round with Sandia High School, the State Champion from the previous year. The team placed second at state; losing to Sandia, who finished in 4th place at the National Competition. In the 2009 Northern Regionals competition, the Cibola Gold team took all 12 possible ballots and 2 outstanding witness and 2 outstanding attorney awards, a feat that had not been accomplished since 2004 by a previous Cibola team. They ended up taking 2nd place due to a faulty ruling and went to the State competition. At State, they defeated Animas, Sandia, and finally Sandia Prep to take the 2009 State title, along with many individual awards.
- In late October 2008, the Cibola Drama Department put on three shows of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet StreetIn February 2009 they put on Singing in the Rain, a lot of work went into the production. They included special effects which include real "rain". The Cibola High school Orchestra provided music for the production. The final showing ended up with actors getting school awards for best improv.
- They also put on a showing of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, with only a week to practice they put on an epic performance with great acting and lots of improv. Overall reviews were favorable.
- One of Cibola's most popular groups is a sketch comedy group by the name of S-Troupe. S-Troupe is an organization of writers, performers, and artists dedicated to the production and performance of original, expressive, written work. The members of S-Troupe write, produce and, finally, perform their own poetic, dramatic, but mostly comedic scenes and sketches on stage or on video and film. Founded at Cibola High School in 2005 by Mr. Travis Lytle, S-Troupe is also committed to promoting writing and literacy through outreach programs to local elementary and middle schools.
- One of Cibolas most poplular clubs is Operation Smile. Many Cibola students raise money to support this non-profit organization that provides children in third world countries with facial surgeries to fix maladies such as cleft lips and cleft pallets. These children are shunned in their communities and operation smile changes their lives. The club has been sponsored by M.J. Beastin for the past 5 years.
- Two notable students of outstanding character and values who have been two shining stars throughout their two years at Cibola High are Nik B. and Zal S-S. These two students are unanimously voted by the school, and several staff including Mrs. Salazar, M.J. Beastin, and Mrs. Gomez, as the "Best students ever". Mrs. Gomez says, "I almost sent them to the principal's office several times because of their wonderful behavior." The school is very proud and grateful to the stundents, for starting the CHS Help a Child program, and various social welfare projects around the state of New Mexico, including many environmental conservation efforts that the two students organized for the rest of their classmates. They still have two years left and Mr. Schryer, head of discipline, says "the school will mourn the day when those fine young men graduate in 2011".
