For the most part, Veterans Day doesn’t feature the ceremonial pomp and circumstance of its more heralded brother, Memorial Day. There wasn’t a Veterans Day Parade in East County until last year when a patriotic group in Antioch, after spending five years raising funds for and building a war dog memorial near the Antioch Marina, was looking for a new project.

The direction is simple, clear and short. Very short. Shot-by-shot. Hole-by-hole. Chip-by-chip. The directives have come from local legendary coach and female sports pioneer Andria Edwards and the results have been enormous for Deer Valley High School's girls golf team.

Deer Valley High School in Antioch, California, is a public secondary school serving southeast Antioch in Contra Costa County, California. It has successfully been in operation since 1996. In 2007-2008 the student body numbered approximately 3266. The ethnically diverse student population of Deer Valley includes 25.2% white non-Hispanic, 24.7% African-American, 18.6% Hispanic or Latino, 10.6% Asian, 9.3% Filipino, and 1.5% Pacific Islander.
In 2007, the Antioch Unified School District named Scott Bergerhouse and Clarence Isadore co-principals. The co-principal model has previously been implemented in some larger schools in southern California.
Academics
The school is divided into four "houses", Deer Valley is each of which has its own vice-principal and secretary. At the freshman and sophomore levels Deer Valley uses a teaming concept, where groups of students share the same English, math, science, and history teacher.The sheer number and types of classes offered in Deer Valley are considerably higher than that of the "average high school.". In addition to core classes, a wide variety of elective classes are offered to students. In addition to instrumental and choral music, foreign language, drama, automotive, culinary, and art classes, students may also enroll in video production, digital art, web design, animation, law, manufacturing, photography, or careers with children among many others.
Deer Valley also has two academies: The Business Technology Academy and the ESPACE academy (Earth, Space, Astronomy Center for Education). The ESPACE academy has one of the few planetariums on a high school campus in the state of California. Students from DVHS have used space probes to investigate a number of questions for school projects, most notably the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Mars Global Surveyor. A Law Academy is currently in the planning stages for the 2009-10 school year. In addition, Deer Valley had held, for nine consecutive years, the highest API scores in the area (some the highest in the East Bay). "The students at Deer Valley receive education of the highest caliber" (Channel 7 News, 2007). Deer Valley has also been acclaimed as an academic powerhouse ever since its days of origin, one such example can be linked to its broadcasting in the 2006-2007 school year.
