School Notes:
  • Deer Valley High School in Antioch, California is a suburban school serving southeast Antioch. Antioch is located in Contra Costa County, California. It has been in operation since 1996. Over 3300 students attend the school, which is divided into four schools-within-a-school, called houses. Each house has its own vice-principal, secretary, and attendance clerk. In addition certain elective classes such as foreign language and arts are housed in separate parts of the campus. Deer Valley also uses the teaming concept, where groups of students share the same English, Math, Science, and History teacher, depending on grade level. The school website does not elaborate as to how this accommodates for AP classes. Also, the school does not say whether students more advanced in one particular subject may take that subject outside of their team.
  • Athletics: In 2002 the girls cross country team won the North Coast Section Championship, and became the first cross country team at Deer Valley to go to the CIF State Championship meet. They again went to the State championship in 2003. In 2005, the varsity boys cross country team became the first boys cross country team at Deer Valley to go to the CIF State Championship meet, after finishing second at the North Coast Section championship.
  • Interdisciplinary teams: "DVHS interdisciplinary teams are used at the 9th , 10th , and 11th grades[sic] level. The team concept utilizes the smaller school within a school organization, which, among other advantages, allow for common planning time for teachers.
  • Usually each interdisciplinary team includes teachers from each discipline. The teachers have a common planning/conference time when the students are in physical education classes or elective classes. The teams provide a sense of identity and a family-like atmosphere for the students.
  • Deer Valley also sponsors a number of academically oriented academies such as Business Technology and the ESPACE academy (Earth, Space, Astronomy Center for Education). They have one of the few planetariums contained on a high school campus in the state of California. Students from DVHS have used space probes to investigate a number of questions for school projects, most notably the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Mars Global Surveyor.
  • Assessment Results: Deer Valley's California State assessment scores have consistently hovered around 700 on a scale where the target desirable passing score is 800. It ranks in the 9th decile of schools with similar demographics and has been ranked from 6th to 9th decile in overall scores compared to all schools in the state.
  • Notable alumni: Kevin Pereira, host of the G4 television show "Attack of the Show."
