Communities are observing Veterans Day with observances starting Sunday. The observances include these: Yorktown: The annual Yorktown Veterans Day Parade will be held in Shrub Oak. The year's speaker is Maj. Tracy Norman, principal of George Washington Elementary School in Mohegan Lake, who served two tours in Iraq with the U.S. Army National Guard.

SHRUB OAK - For the Lakeland field hockey team, all it took was one goal to get the ball rolling in Tuesday's Section 1 Class B semifinals. The top-seeded Hornets got a goal from sophomore Shannon Scavelli with 16:57 left in the first half and never looked back.

Troopers charged six motorists with driving while intoxicated after recent traffic stops and an accident investigation, state police said today. More Yorktown scored seven goals in the first quarter and held Guilderland scoreless for almost 35 minutes in yesterday's 16-4 Class A state quarterfinal rout.

Lakeland High School is located in Shrub Oak, New York. As of 2007, the principal is Mrs. Cheryl Champ. Lakeland High School is part of the Lakeland Central School District, and is a sister school to Walter Panas High School of Cortlandt Manor, New York. The school colors are gold and green and the school mascot is the Hornets.
Student activities
Debate
The school is home to the Lakeland District Debate Team, which also includes students from Walter Panas High School. The team has a long and distinguished history and competes successfully on a national level, with members regularly qualifying to compete in national championship tournaments. Former coaches Bill Vogel and Greg Varley are members of the prestigious Key Coach Society of Emory University, and Varley was elected to the National Forensics League Coaches Hall of Fame in 1998. Alumni of the team have gone on to successful careers in government, law, medicine, and international human rights and aid organizations.
Field Hockey
The Lakeland High school field hockey team won New York state championships in 1990, 2003, and 2006. The team is coached by Sharon Sarsen, who has 423 wins under her belt. The current record-holder for most goals at the school is Melissa Gonzalez, who scored 124 goals in her career and currently plays for the USA Under 21 team that won the Pan Am Junior World Cup in 2008. Melissa is also on the US Senior National Reserve Team for 2009.
Notable alumni
T.C. Boyle, Author, taught at Lakeland High School from 1968 to 1972.
Lawrence Lindsay, Economist, a 1972 graduate, and champion member of the speech and debate team, a former member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve,a professor at Harvard University, and President George W. Bush's former adviser for economic policy.
Rocco Gioia, Professional Boxer and career Greenville Firefighter, class of 2002.
Ryan Schneider, 2004 graduate, Professional basketball player in Portugal who played college baskeetball at Vermont and Marist. He is Lakeland's all-time leading scorer for basketball.
Sal Lagonia, a 2001 graduate, Writer and Producer for NBC and CBS.
