School Notes:
  • New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math, usually referred to as NEST+m, is a New York City, New York public school, located at 111 Columbia Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It serves students from kindergarten through grade twelve. Nest+m is one of three citywide Gifted and Talented(G&T) programs in Manhattan. G&T programs are provided for students identified as gifted and talented by assessments that are administered by the New York City Department of Education(DOE). For the program, students are selected solely based on test scores. To be eligible for placement to Citywide G&T programs, students have to score at or above the 97th percentile on the assessments administered while to District G&T programs students have to score at or above the 90th percentile.
  • The school was founded by former principal Celenia Chévere, an alumna of the progressive Bank Street College of Education.
  • Administration
  • Following school founder Celenia Chévere, Dr. Olga Livanis was appointed interim acting principal in June 2006, and formally appointed principal in January 2007. Livanis had been an assistant principal, in charge of Chemistry and Physics, at Stuyvesant High School. She received a Masters Degree with Honors in Science Education from The City College of New York (CUNY), and a doctorate in Science Education with Honors from Columbia University in 2002. Earlier in her educational career she earned a BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute.
  • Controversy
  • Principal Chévere objected to a proposed building-sharing arrangement with the Ross Global Academy Charter School, and was removed from her post in 2006.
  • On October 27, 2006, police closed down a meeting of the NEST+m Parent Teacher Association. Earlier in the meeting, eight members of the PTA executive board announced their resignation, citing multiple grievances against the interim acting administration. At this same meeting, an election for the School Leadership Team was held, with four of the five seats going to candidates who had announced their intentions to work amicably with the new Administration.
  • Additional controversy has surrounded NEST+m in regards to its admissions process prior to September 2006. The New York City Department of Education alleged that interviews of parents were factored into the admissions process, citing cases where less qualified children were granted admission due to their parent's performance during an interview. Similarly, there are allegations of qualified children being denied admission due to their parent's characteristics, such as limited English proficiency.
