Scarsdale High School (SHS) is a public high school in Scarsdale, New York, situated in the suburbs of Westchester County, founded in 1917. In its very first selection process, the United States Department of Education named Scarsdale High School as "one of the 144 exemplary schools to which others may look for patterns of success."
From the graduating class of 2007, 99.1% continued their education with college programs, and 96.7% entered 127 different four-year national and international colleges and universities. 20 students in the class of '08 (5.4%) were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, and 35 (9.6%) students received National Merit Letters of commendation.
Currently in 2007-08, SHS has a professional staff of 163 with a 18 years median teaching experience. 98% of the faculty holds a Masters; 71% has 30 credits or more beyond a Masters; 10% has Doctorate Degrees. The student faculty ratio is 9.2 to 1, and its teachers have one of the highest paying salaries in the country (44% had a base-salary of over $100,000 in 2005).
SHS is part of the District-wide "green" initiative to learn about and model sustainability.
The high school is making a transition from Advanced Placement to Advanced Topics (AT) courses to encourage higher levels of thinking beyond rote learning in a rigorous yet lively learning environment.
