At New Bridge Middle School in Jacksonville, Veterans’ Day is more than a day off from school. This year, the school’s entire 8th grade class — nearly 150 students in total — took time Monday and Tuesday to learn more about veterans and to reach out to deployed troops.

The Kuumba Festival will be held today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the American Legion Building on Broadhurst Road. The Kuumba (meaning creativity) Festival, which features entertainment, arts, crafts, food and more, promotes awareness of African-American culture and unity among all people.

Jacksonville's "Downtown Going Green" Festival is back for its fourth year. Saturday's festival, sponsored by Bettering Our Local Downtown of Jacksonville and EXIT Homeplace Realty, initially started as a St. Patrick's Day event to get more people involved downtown.
