- Lakota East High School is a high school in the Lakota School District which comprises both West Chester Township and Liberty Township in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio.
- From what once was a unified Lakota High School came both Lakota East High School and Lakota West. The two physically identical schools were built in 1997 when severe over-crowding forced the district to expand. The two high schools have an interdistrict rivalry which shows off each year at the East/West football game. This game usually draws record crowds, is usually televised, and held at Lakota East High School every year.
- East holds grades 10-12. The school year is divided into two semesters with two quarters each. The Thunderhawk is the mascot of Lakota East. It was derived from the original mascot, the Lakota Thunderbirds, which became the Lakota East Thunderhawks and the Lakota West Firebirds. The school colors are black and white and silver. The school is classified a Division 1 school under OHSAA standards and is a member of the GMC- the Greater Miami Conference.
- The school's student-run, and nationally accredited and award winning news magazine, the Spark, runs 7 issues each school year including a college bowl guide.
- The school's radio station, WLHS 89.9 FM, is operated by students from both Lakota East and Lakota West but is actually housed at Lakota East.Lakota East's yearbook is also very popular. It is a class in which the students must raise all of the funds needed to finance the production of the yearbook. This year they made "Beat West" t-shirts and sold advertisement spots to the local business in the community.
- Lakota East's Latin club functions as a local chapter of both the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL) and National Junior Classical League (NJCL).
- Lakota East is also home to the Marching Thunderhawks that is under the direction of William Thomas. On October 24th, 2009 at the 23rd Annual Shawnee High School March-O-Rama the marching band scored a 281.65, which is the highest score earned in the schools history.
- The school is also the home of the FIRST robotics team 1038, which in 2001 won the Newton Divisional of the International Championships.
-
Established: 1997
Mascot: Thunderhawk
Colors: Black, White, Silver
Location: 6840 Lakota Lane, Liberty Township, Ohio 45044
- Lakota East was established along with its sister-school Lakota West in the division of the former Lakota High School. Overcrowding forced the school to split into two identical schools, one to the east and one to the west. The two have been rivals ever since. The two rivals compete annually over an East-West athletics trophy, awarded to the school with the better performance. The trophy has stayed with Lakota West every year since the two schools were established, except for a tie in the 2003-2004 school year.
- Drama Controversy
-
The school was recently the subject of an internationally covered dispute between the drama club, which was set to put on the play Ten Little Indians, and Gary Hines, the head of the local chapter of the NAACP, who complained to the school that the play's original title in 1939, Ten Little Niggers, was racist. The play was originally canceled, but after a little controversy, the admins of the school decided to put on the almost identical play And Then There Were None.
