When we were house hunting in 1992, we stumbled across the Enon Apple Butter Festival. To a family that had just escaped the chaos of Los Angeles, it was everything we’d hoped to find in a village festival: community working together, great food, interesting booths, and lots of neighbors just having fun.

When teachers come to the Chesterfield County schools’ free supply center, some of them grab some unusual things—such as shaving cream. “It’s not used for shaving, primarily,“ said Irving S. Driscoll, who coordinates the center. “Kindergarten and first-grade teachers spray it on their desks and children have fun tracing their numbers and letters. The ROTC students . . . use it to shine new shoes.“
