South Hills High School (often known by its abbreviation, SHHS) is a public coeducational high school located in the hills in the eastern part of West Covina, California (although there is a common misconception that it is in Covina), east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. South Hills High School is part of the Covina-Valley Unified School District.
The school's high academic and athletic reputation as one of the top schools in the area is a prime selling point for real estate in Covina and West Covina. It is also considered the best and most affluent high school in the Covina/West Covina area. It attracts a large number of transfer students who would otherwise attend other nearby high schools such as West Covina High School and Northview High School. Students even commute from as far away as Chino, Rancho Cucamonga, and Fontana to attend South Hills.
Academics: The school's great academic reputation has attracted many transfer students. There are several courses available at South Hills that are not available at other nearby schools, which is especially true for some of its AP course offerings. As of the 2004-2005 school year, it is the only high school in the Covina-Valley Unified School District that offers AP Calculus BC, AP Environmental Science, AP Studio Art, AP French, AP Computer Science, and AP World History. A large percentage of the student body takes at least one honors or AP course during the school year.
SHHS does not weigh its GPAs for honors and AP courses, as colleges reconfigure GPAs. As a result, anyone with a 4.0 GPA graduates as a valedictorian. There were six valedictorians in the class of 2006.
College Destinations: South Hills High graduates go on to a large variety of colleges and universities throughout California and the nation. According to state data, approximately 40% of graduates go to a California Community College (mainly Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) and Citrus College). Approximately 12% each go to a California State University or a University of California campus.

Athletics: South Hills High School has a fine athletic tradition, and its teams have won many CIF championships.
South Hills competes in the CIF Southern Section: San Antonio League with Nogales High School, Rowland High School, Walnut High School, and West Covina High School.
Its football and baseball teams are especially well-regarded. The wrestling team won the California state championship in 1981. The following sports are available at South Hills: Fall Season Boys: Football, Cross Country.
Fall Season Girls: Volleyball, Cross Country, Tennis.
Winter Season Boys: Basketball, Wrestling, Soccer.
Winter Season Girls: Basketball, Wrestling, Soccer.
Spring Season Boys: Baseball, Tennis, Track and field, Swimming, Golf.
Spring Season Girls: Softball, Track and field, Swimming, Golf.
Band: South Hills High School not only has a fine athletic department, but it also has a reputable band. SHHS's band motto is "Intensity." They perform at competitions in Class 4A (Class 6A is the group with the largest bands).In 2006-2007, they were awarded the Bronze Medal in the SCSBOA Championships 4A Band. Their performing groups include: Marching Band; Concert Band: Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble; Jazz band; Color guard; Percussion ensemble.
Famous and notable alumni: Jason Giambi- Major League Baseball player (New York Yankees).
Jeremy Giambi- Major League Baseball player.
Tommy Lee - Mötley Crüe drummer (did not graduate; also attended Royal Oak High School).
Cory Lidle- late Major League Baseball player.
Kevin Lidle- former Minor League Baseball player (Detroit Tigers farm team) and 1992 Olympian.
Matthew Rogers- American Idol finalist, 2004 season.
Aaron Small- Major League Baseball player (New York Yankees).
