Classes begin next Tuesday, Sept. 8 for the Seaside School District and administrators say this promises to be a challenging new school year. District Superintendent Doug Dougherty expects fewer students, “Mainly because of the economy.”

A celebration of a program that serves free lunches to more than 100 students in Seaside and Cannon Beach throughout the summer months will be held Friday in Seaside, and a large group of city and state officials will be in attendance to show their support.

It has been a roller coaster ride for the Seaside Gulls’ baseball team lately. Last week the Gulls lost a cold, dark three-plus hour marathon game to the Banks Braves at home (13-10) on Tuesday, then crushed the Braves in Banks 28-1 on Thursday.

Young children won’t be the only ones out scampering for Easter eggs on Saturday at Broadway Park, as senior citizens 65 and older will be out on the field with the kids this year during the Providence Seaside Hospital Community Egg Hunt.
