School Notes:
  • Warwick Veterans High School (also known as Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, WVMHS, or Vets) is a 9-12th grade secondary school in Warwick, Rhode Island. The school is two stories high and features eight wings of classes, mainly divided by subject (A, B, C, D, "E" F, G, and 900 wing). The logo for all Vets "Hurricane" teams is a reverse-rotating hurricane symbol.
  • The school was created in the mid 1950s as a response to a booming Warwick population — the previous High School (now Samuel Gorton Junior High) was too small to occupy the large amount of incoming students. In the 1970s, an extension (now called 900 wing) was added to the school. Since the 1970s, two additional High Schools have been constructed to answer Warwick's population increase.
  • Athletics: The ice hockey team underwent a two year winless streak after relocating from division B to division A. The girls' field hockey team was the 2005 division and state champions. Additionally, the boys' outdoor track team has been the city champions for eight years and division B champions for four years. The Freshman Football team has reached the championship game in two consecutive years (2004-05 & 2005-06) but lost both games to town cross town rival Pilgrim High School and Tolman High School respectively. Both championship teams are on the JV and Varsity Teams.
  • Teacher Controversy: It was offened Rumored that one of the teachers got into a physical confrontation with a student, said three students from Warwick Area Career And Tech. center (where the teacher that was Rumored to have the confrontation transferred from). As of now we know the teacher is no longer teaching at Veterans High School we do not know if this is the reason or not. One concerned parent makes a phone call to the Warwick Public Schools Administration the parent says " the Administration will not talk to me about the incident they will not even admit that it happened and say we are a safe and fun school for your children".
  • Other activities: The school features active chapters of FBLA, DECA, Math League, Academic Decathlon, GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), and other clubs. Warwick Veterans also has a concert band that performs several concerts a year, a marching band which plays at parades on Veterans Day and Gaspee Day, and a jazz band which usually performs with the concert band — all are run by Danielle Prior. A chorus, jazz chorus, and string enesemble are also part of the School's musical department and are run by Nancy Kennedy.
