School Notes:
  • Irvington High School is a high school located in Fremont, California. It opened in the Fall of 1961. It is one of five 9-12 grade public high schools in Fremont. Major construction in 1968 resulted in the addition of a 350-seat theater, a second gymnasium, and twenty-two classrooms.
  • The 44-acre campus is located in Irvington the south-central district of Fremont. The attendance area includes the Fremont neighborhoods of Irvington, Weibel, and Warm Springs. Students choosing to enter the school that live outside the district lines, may apply for a lottery, or a transfer into the Irvington Arts Magnet Program.
  • Irvington High School is a California Distinguished School, a National Blue Ribbon School, and a New American High School.
  • The school mascot is the Viking. The Viking represents a warrior like nature with a curiously intruiging exploring side.
  • Extracurriculars: Irvington houses a drama program named The Irvington Conservatory Theater (www.irvingtonconservatory.com) in its theater dubbed "Valhalla". The school holds a partnership with the local community college, Ohlone College. Recent productions include: Once upon this Island (spring 2004), Cinderella (fall 2004), Kiss Me Kate (spring 2005), A Christmas Carol (fall 2005), Little Shop of Horrors (spring 2006), and "Wind in the Willows" (fall 2006) which hasn't opened yet.
  • Irvington boasts a We The People team composed of 24 students. In the 2004-05 school year, the team won fourth place in the nation.
  • Irvington's varsity football team took first place in the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) in 2005, beating out top competitor Logan High School in Union City. The football team made it through NCS finals, reaching the final game at played at the Oakland Colisseum. Unfortunately, the Irvington football team lost. Irvington looks forward to another year of success in MVAL football.
  • Irvington's varsity boys swim team also won first place at MVAL championships this year, beating long-time rival Mission San Jose High School. Mission lost its first place title for the first time in 26 years.
  • Irvington's Varsity boys cross country team took second place at the MVAL championships in 2005, winning the the number 3, 4, and 6 spots in the All League top ten. This was Irvingtons best finish in over 18 years. Varsity and JV girls also extended their rankings to 2nd at MVALs in 2006 and look to be a state contender in the following years, already sending one of their own to the CIF State meet 2006.
  • Irvington's marching band won first place in the B division marching competition in 2005 at Lincoln High School in Stockton. Colorguard took first place at Lincoln, as well as the 35th Annual Santa Cruz Band Review. The school includes a Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Drumline. In the 06-07 school year, a Concert Band will be added.
  • In general, Irvington Athletics has had a very poor showing at many matches and competitions among teams from both the North Coast Section and Mission Valley Athletic League. Irvington is still developing its talent in many sports, as it struggles to find skilled and sportsmanship like individuals to join the many athletics programs offered during the three athletic seasons.
  • Irvington High School's Badminton team took 2nd at NCS making it the most successful sport Irvington has.
  • Irvington's school newspaper is called The Voice. Irvington also publishes an annual arts magazine known as The Rune.
  • It should be noted that Irvington High School was once a school of low academic achievements. It wasn't until the district brought in students from the academically high achieving Weibel Elementary School was it able to bring test scores up.
  • There is evidence to this claim. One of which is the fact that before this boundary change, all Weibel students will eventually end up in Mission San Jose High School. In fact, it is possible for students living close to Weibel to travel to Mission San Jose High School by foot or by car. Weibel was also known to be a school of high achieving students. At the same time, Irvington High School was stuggling to get its students to pass standardized tests. Therefore, the district transferred the academic students of Weibel so that they will go to Irvington High School instead of Misson San Jose, even though Misson San Jose High School is a lot closer to the neighborhood around Weibel than Irvington High School is. Since the transfer of students and changes in boundaries, the Irvington High School has improved greatly than before. Classes for high achieving students were started, classes that were not available before the changes, including new Advanced Placement and Specialized Career classes. The reason they did this is to give a false image that Irvington has always been academically superior, when in fact they are only offering these new high level classes to give the new students some courses to take so they can bring the scores and grades up.
