School Reviews

Two years in and our overall experience at Small has been overwhelmingly positive. The quality of teachers is high. The principal is focused on building relationships with students and creating an individualized middle school experience for each child. He listens to student and parent feedback, communication has improved over the last year and he has implemented many changes during the school day for the kids. The Green Tech Program offers so many elective options for all students. The school is diverse (we are transfers and appreciate this) and my student reports an overall welcoming social atmosphere. Sure, there are "groups" and "cliques" as it is middle school, but he feels that there is something to do - and someone to hang out with - for all students with all different interests.

Small is an overall mediocre school except for some of the teachers. My child has been treated with much disprespect from several of the teachers that work at Small.

Small is a typical school in that some of its teachers are good and others are just ok. The school is overcrowded as is everywhere in the Austin area now.The only good thing I can say is that the school seems to have some interesting classes for 6th graders. My son could not get into the robotics class , or the other electives he chose because they have a record number of students this year in 6th grade. He went on the first day of registration and he still was put in classes he did not want. He has adjusted to these classes. The thing he has a hard time adjustinf to is the tight security. There is a constant presence of security officers in the school all day and outside. I thought that was probably a good thing, however when I walked over to pick up my son after he stayed late to take a test he had missed I found it difficult to deal with the security. The doors are locked and you enter and sign in at the office that leads into the school. This is normal enough, but then I went up to see the teacher and the doors to her wing were locked and I had to go back and ask and find a way up to the 3rd floor once again. When I stepped out in front to find my son the teacher had just released I was stopped and questioned again by the security. I felt like I was in jail. Did it give me a safe feeling? If it did,it also made me feel like something terrible had , or was expected to happen at that school. Small is not the school for us and my son wants to move and go back to his other school. I have always felt a very impersonal atmosphere at Small.
