    For a classic children’s book about a horse, Gigi Amateau knew she needed a classic setting that would live up to such books as “Black Beauty” and “Misty of Chincoteague.“ So even though Amateau lives in Bon Air and stables her horse in Chesterfield County, she chose the Blue Ridge Mountains near Lexington as the setting for “Chancey of the Maury River.“

    Katie Hutchison spent most of the day yesterday drawing a turtle in the middle of 43rd Street in Richmond’s Westover Hills neighborhood. At the 43rd Street Festival of the Arts, the eighth-grader from Midlothian Middle School in Chesterfield County put her abilities to work using chalk. She also met area artists and admired their work, including paintings, ceramics and glass.

    When teachers come to the Chesterfield County schools’ free supply center, some of them grab some unusual things—such as shaving cream. “It’s not used for shaving, primarily,“ said Irving S. Driscoll, who coordinates the center. “Kindergarten and first-grade teachers spray it on their desks and children have fun tracing their numbers and letters. The ROTC students . . . use it to shine new shoes.“
