School Notes:
  • Livermore High School is a public high school located in the town of Livermore, California, USA, and is part of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD).
  • History of Livermore High School: Livermore High School was founded in 1891 as the first union high school in the state of California. Mr. F.R. Fassett, a leading citizen of Livermore, California, introduced the bill that allowed union high schools to be founded in California.
  • Livermore established its high school which was opened in 1891. The Class of 1894 was first to graduate from Livermore Union High School. The contract for the first high school building was agreed upon December 31, 1892. The building consisted of eight rooms and was finished in the summer of 1893 on the site of what is now a Livermore Area Parks and Recreation District Facility.
  • Immediately after spring vacation in 1930, the high school students moved into a new two-story, red brick building with 14 classrooms and an auditorium, located at the present site. In 1939, the building was made earthquake-proof and refinished with a stucco face. Since then, many new classrooms, buildings, and facilities have been added to the school. A cafeteria and multi-purpose building was constructed in 1973. During the 1988-89 school year the auditorium was completely renovated, and is now known as the Livermore High School Performing Arts Theater.
  • Recently, during the 2004-2005 school year, much of the outside campus was renovated, including the installation of an outdoor amphitheater, the replacement of the football field with a low-maintenance synthetic turf, and new cement and asphalt surfaces in the school quad.
  • A new schedule went into effect for the 2006-2007 school year.
  • Academics: Livermore offers a wide variety of courses, including many Advanced Placement and honors courses. There were 45 Advanced Placement scholars at Livermore for the 2004-2005 school year.
  • Livermore High School is also a member of the Tri-Valley Regional Occupation Program (ROP), hosting numerous ROP classes such as Auto Body, Environmental Science, Criminal Justice, and Marketing.
  • Athletics: Livermore High School has a teams in 15 sports: Swimming, Diving, Track and Field, Water Polo, Basketball, Cross Country, Baseball, Football, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball, Lacrosse and Wrestling. They compete in the North Coast Section CIF (NCS) and East Bay Athletic League (EBAL). The Cowboy football team was EBAL champions in 1971 and 1972 and undefeated in league play. The Cowboy cross-country team were EBAL champions in 2005.
  • Fun Facts: Livermore High School has a friendly rivalry with Granada High School. During the sports season, the rivalry almost always gets visual too, such as hundreds of dead goldfish scattered in and around the Granada pool one day before a water polo meet, as well as trash thrown in the Livermore High pool a week later. During the 2004-2005 school year, Livermore High School participated in the Livermore Police Department's "Buckle Up for Safety" campaign, in which the high schools in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District competed against one another to see which school had the fewest amount of cars with passengers not wearing seatbelts. Student Steven Zupan created a PSA-type video starring students Devin Ritchie and Christian Villanueva for Livermore High School. The video was shown to all students to encourage the use of seatbelts. Teachers and other staff would also have fun messages and sometimes music put in the daily gram to encourage students to wear their seatbelts.
  • During the 2004-2005 school year, the ABC television network's show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition held a benefit concert at the Livermore High School football field to raise money to build a house for a family in need. All of the members of that family have attended, are attending, or will be attending Livermore High. The house is located very close to the school. The event was shown during the episode. Livermore High School is also the host to the yearly American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Livermore, California.
