School Notes:
  • Brentsville District High School is a public high school in Nokesville in unincorporated Prince William County, Virginia, United States, and part of Prince William County Public Schools. It is the only high school in Prince William County considered to be in a developing rural community.
  • In May 2007, Newsweek Magazine ranked Brentsville High School 674th in the nation on its annual list of "Best High Schools in America."
  • History
  • Brentsville officially opened on September 5, 1929, and hosted grades one through eleven. From 1929 to 1964, Brentsville existed in the building that currently exists as Nokesville Elementary School. In 1964, the school moved to its new building located on Aden road, and over the years additions were made to the building's structure, with the most recent being a new gym building, with the old gym becoming the school's current library.
  • In 2002, campus ceased to function in its tandem role as middle and high school, instead becoming exclusively a high school facility. Remodeling plans for 2006 include the refitting of the auditorium, adding more comfortable seats, bowing the stage, and replacing a sound panel wall.
  • In 2007, the school announced the construction of a new building (Kettle Run High School) that will host Brentsville's population, and the plan to convert the current Brentsville campus into a middle school. The new school is planned for a location closer to the more suburban Vint Hill area.
  • Demographics
  • In the 2008-2009 school year, Brentsville was 80% White; 12% Black; 6% Hispanic; and 2% Asian.
  • Athletics and extracurriular accomplishments
  • Brentsville's mascot is the tiger and the sports teams currently play in the AA Evergreen District and Region II. Because Brentsville is the only Prince William County school that does not play in Group AAA, they rarely play schools in their county in athletic activities. Nevertheless, the school still takes pride in its storied wrestling and cross country championship histories, with Sports Illustrated Magazine in 2005 deeming this school as the top athletic school in Virginia. The school has also been a recipient of the Blue Ribbon Academic School award.
  • Brentsville played in the A Bull Run District until 2003 due to the school's exploding population. Brentsville's enrollment continues to grow very rapidly today and may soon be in Group AAA as early as 2011, when the Tigers would finally be united with their Prince William neighbors. In 2009, Brentsville is projected to be the second-biggest AA school in the state, trailing only current Northwestern District rival Sherando.
  • Recently, the literary magazine, Rhapsody, won 1st place in the Virginia High School League competition. This was the fifth time the magazine won this award.
