- El Cerrito High School is a public school in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. It is located at 540 Ashbury Avenue, El Cerrito, California 94530
- Overview
-
The main school building was built in the late 1930s as a WPA project. The school opened to students on January 6, 1941.
- Student population quickly outgrew the facilities, and the campus became a collection of small, outlying buildings. Concern grew over the buildings becoming physically unsafe and in a state of decay. Plans were made for more integrated buildings and, in the summer of 2005, demolition of the old campus began. In 2007, the campus was demolished, and the terrain was leveled in preparation for reconstruction. During the reconstruction, all classes were held in temporary buildings located south of the campus in the former baseball field. The new campus opened January 5, 2009.
- El Cerrito high school’s profile of students by race is: 43% African-American, 23.5% Hispanic, 18% Caucasian, 13% Asian, and 2.5% Filipino according the high school’s own handout that is inserted when the guidance office sends out transcripts. Many of these students are actually mixed race making El Cerrito a very diverse high school. The same document states that almost sixty percent of students are low income and qualify for the federal school lunch program. Many El Cerrito students come from the neighboring city of Richmond which is also in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. In 2003 and 2005 the Morgan Quitno social research group's annual study showed that on a per-capita basis Richmond was California’s “most dangerous city”, beating out other hopefuls Compton and Oakland. Also, two years in a row it was the eleventh most violent city in the United States. The ranking is based on six violent crimes including murder, rape, and aggravated assault. (See http://www.morganquitno.com/ cit05pop.htm0)
- Top El Cerrito students regularly get into elite universities. From the graduating class of 2009 for instance students will be going to Stanford, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego among others.
