The woman who called 911 to report the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl at Richmond High School was honored Tuesday night for her "act of humanity." The Richmond City Council commended Margarita Vargas, 18, for calling authorities when she learned of the Oct. 24 assault.

The Richmond City Council is honoring the woman who reported the Oct. 24 Richmond High School gang rape by issuing an official proclamation commending her "act of humanity" at Tuesday night's council meeting. The Richmond High School boys basketball team will have a Red and White showcase Wednesday at Tiernan Center. The scrimmages, which start at 6 p.m., will feature teams in the junior high and high school programs. The JV will start at 6:55 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:05.

Richmond High School (RHS) is a public high school located in Richmond, California, USA. It is part of the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD).
Alumni and Post-High School Education
The school has a low direct to college rate, with many students choosing to attend a community college and transfer to a four-year university. Many students do not end up completing the transfer, however.
Sports
Since the schools opening, few championships have come from the football or baseball teams. A new coaching staff, which include NFL Tight End Courtney Anderson, will accompany Coach Jeff Tyner in his first year of coaching.
Ken Carter
Richmond came into the media in 1999 due to the actions taken by basketball coach Ken Carter. Carter, a former Richmond student himself, cancelled all scheduled games and practices of the undefeated team in an unprecedented move due to fifteen of his players having unacceptably poor academic performance. Heavily criticised initially by students, parents, teachers and the media, he was then praised due to his emphasis on further education.
This media story was also the focal point of the 2005 film Coach Carter starring Samuel L. Jackson which gives a storylined account of Carter's time managing the team with the main focal point being on the "lock-out."
Crime
In October 2009, a girl at a Richmond High School dance was gang-raped while at least 20 onlookers, all male, did nothing and were said to have been laughing and taking photos with their cell phones. According to police, the 15-year-old girl was raped by at least four different suspects committing multiple sex acts. Several students from Richmond High School were held for questioning. A 19-year-old former Richmond High School student was arrested after he fled the scene.
