  • San Jose High Academy (SJHA) is the oldest high school in California and was founded in 1863. The school mascot is the Bulldog.
  • In 2005, San Jose High was ranked 218th on Newsweek's list of America's top one thousand high schools.The 2006 edition lists San Jose in position 224.
  • The school has offered the International Baccalaureate program since 1985. Before 1985, San Jose High Academy was known as San Jose High School. A federal judge ordered involuntary desegregation in the Mexican Unified School District, which resulted in creating an IB regular school at SJHA.
  • San Jose High Academy is known for the Big Bone Game with Lincoln High School, its cross-town rivals. The game is played every Thanksgiving at San Jose City College.
  • Big Bone Game: The football teams of San Jose High and Lincoln face off at San Jose City College each Thanksgiving in the Big Bone Game, an annual game held on Thanksgiving Day at San Jose City College. This rivalry game has been held since 1945; it gets its name from San Jose High School (now Academy) student Bob Schimdt in 1945, who found a large steer leg in his father's butcher shop and declared it the trophy for the winning school. San Jose won the first Big Bone, but Lincoln has been the home of the bone for 38 of the 62 years. Also, Lincoln has been in possession of the bone for eight straight years, tying the longest winning streak in Big Bone history set by Lincoln from 1962 to 1969.
