- San Jose High Academy (SJHA) is the second oldest public high school in California and was founded in 1863. The school mascot is the Bulldog.
- The school has offered the International Baccalaureate program since 1985. Since 1999 the school also has offered the IB Middle Years Program along with it's major feeder middle school, Peter Burnett Academy (middle school). Before 1985, San Jose High Academy was known as San Jose High School.
- Recently, San Jose High Academy reached its highest score of 702, improving by 63 points in the last two years on the state of California's measurement of academic achievement. This score reflects the most improved comprehensive high school in the San Jose Unified School District and the 2nd highest improvement in Santa Clara County. The campus facility has had several renovations in 2000, 2004, and 2007-present. A new science building opened in March 2009. A new Career Technology-Pre-Engineering building broke ground in July 2009. This building will house the only location in northern California of the prestigious Project Lead the Way Program (pre-engineering program) which will be in its third year at SJHA. The school is currently under construction with new exterior painting, as well as renovations to the library as well as several classrooms. Currently, the school enrollment is just over 1000 students which allows for a comfortable, safe, small school environment.

- Big Bone Game
- The football teams of San Jose High Academy and Abraham Lincoln High School face off at San Jose City College each Thanksgiving in the Big Bone Game. This rivalry game has been held since 1945; it gets its name from San Jose High (now Academy) student Bob Schimdt in 1945, who found a large steer leg in his father's butcher shop and declared it the trophy for the winning school. San Jose won the first Big Bone, but Lincoln has been the home of the bone for 38 of the 66 years.
- The Junior Varsity football teams from both schools hold a Little Bone Game the Thursday prior to the Big Bone Game.
