Everglades High School is a public school located in Miramar, Florida. The school serves approximately 3,100 students from both Miramar and Pembroke Pines in grades 9 through 12. The current school hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. The principal is Dr. Paul Fetscher.
The first president of Everglades was Emanuel Washington Jr in 2004. For the 2007-2008 school year, Everglades made all incoming freshman take classes in the portables at the at the former Charles W. Flanagan High School Annex due to overpopulation. Another high school was constructed in Pembroke Pines, Florida, called West Broward High School to resolve the overcrowding issue. Everglades High has an FCAT school grade of "C" for the 2008-2009 academic year, with 71% of the students passing the math FCAT and 41% of the students passing the reading FCAT. Everglades has a student to teacher ratio of 22:1, above the state average of 15:1.
History
The temporary location was at the former Charles W. Flanagan High School and Annex because of the ongoing final construction of the Everglades main building. The School schedule was held in double sessions during the months at the annex because of the large population, where the class of 2007 freshman had classes from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and upperclassmen had classes from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The class of 2004 of Everglades had a total of 12 senior students.
For the 2007- 2008 school year, freshmen students were sent to the annex portable site that they had originally used for the school's first class of students.
Athletics
Everglades High has a variety of varsity and junior varsity sports. The Everglades football stadium, which is named Eastern Financial Stadium at Everglades High School, was funded in the school's first year of existence by Eastern Financial. Some achievements by the sports teams include the 2006 girls' Varsity Softball team becoming state champions in 2007 and the 2006 Varsity Football team becoming undefeated district champions with a 10-0 record. Softball has also been District Champions from 2005-2007 and were also Regional Champions in 2005 and 2007. The Everglades High School Varsity Golf Team has "threepeated" as district champions from 2005 to 2007.
