- Maria Carrillo High School is a high school in Santa Rosa, California, a mid-sized city about sixty miles north of San Francisco. Maria Carrillo High School is the newest public high school in both Santa Rosa and in Sonoma County, having opened in 1996. It is located in the northeastern part of Santa Rosa, also known as "Rincon Valley".
- History
-
Maria Carrillo High School was originally named after Maria Carrillo, the first woman to receive a land grant from the Spanish-Mexican government. The school opened in 1996. Its first graduating class was in 1999 due to the fact that only Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors were accepted at its opening.
- Facts
- The school mascot is a Puma
- The school's official colors are forest green, Vegas gold, and black.
- Maria Carrillo has a reputation for higher academic standards within Sonoma County, excelling in the performing arts, math, sciences, languages and sports.
- Pranks
- In 1999, the head stone of Maria Carrillo was stolen from a local cemetery and left in the main quad.
- A recurring prank is the vandalism of a privately owned neighboring hill. The hill was first vandalized in 1998 with the numbers 4-20, the date which many know as the unofficial day for smoking marijuana. The principal ordered it removed, and it was changed to H-20. In 2000, the junior class (class of 2001) carved 2001 into the hill as part of homecoming weekend. Within days, a group of seniors altered the 1 into a 0, leaving 2000. This began a tradition in which graduating classes have carved their year into the hill. Various symbols have also been carved: a Viking helmet (a prank done by a competing football team), an anatomically incorrect depiction of male genitals and a backwards swastika. The swastika was subsequently obscured with a large peace sign. The hill has also been vandalized with a prom invitation. "Lexi, Prom?" "No"
- In 2002, seniors painted the school's colors on a Ford Pinto, took off the wheels, and propped it in the main quad.
- In 2004, upperclassmen chopped down 7 trees in the Quad. Some students were outraged, along with most staff. 4 students, 3 seniors and a junior later confessed to the crime and were sent to separate high schools.
- In 2004, seniors built a wooden box surrounding Principal Klick's car in the staff parking lot.
- In 2005, seniors released several chickens in the main quad. It took all day for the janitors to retrieve the fowl from some of the towers and roofs across the campus.
- In 2008, seniors zip tied the backpacks of many of the underclassmen.
- In 2008, the 2009 seniors put pictures of the principal's head photoshopped onto different things all over the school.
- In 2008, the 2010 junior put 2 skunks in two different trash cans in the main quad. It took all of first period to get the skunks out.
- In 2008, various watermelons were placed at the ledge of the clock tower and at the tip of the drama building.
- Notable Events
- In 2002, peace activists put up 50 straw figures all around campus with anti-war signs to protest the almost 50 Afghanistan civilians attending a wedding party that were killed by the US military.
- In 2003, peace activists again put up many anti-war signs on buildings, roofs, and used chalk to depict anti-war messages to protest the Iraq invasion.
- In 2006 the initials G.F. inside of a heart were put on the neighborhood hill in memory of Maria Carrillo High School student Garret Martin Fogg, who died on July 1, 2006 from a brain infection. That same year the mens varsity soccer team won the North Coast Section 3A title and dedicated their season to Garrett, who would have been on the team.
- In December 2006 the initials J.F. were put on the neighborhood hill in memory of Maria Carrillo High School senior Jonathan Field, who took his own life just six months before he would have graduated.
- In 2008, the members of the Amnesty International club wrote statements against the mistreatment of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay in chalk.
