    A new study suggests that African-American students who participate in debate leagues earn better grades, are more three times more likely to graduate from high school than similar students who do not join their debate team, and are better prepared for college success.

    Ronald German, salutatorian for Media Communications Technology High School’s Class of 2009, told the crowd that when he moved to Boston from the Dominican Republic at age 8, he only knew how to say “hi” and “bye” in English. German said he became disruptive and “hung out with the wrong crowd.”
