School Notes:
  • New Vista High School opened its doors in the Fall of 1993 with a mission "to break the mold " of conventional secondary school practice. A small public high school of choice, serving a heterogeneous student body, we have two main goals. The first is one that every high school must have-to educate students in the conventional subjects and prepare them for a variety of post secondary programs. The second goal is more unusual and defines our unique environment. We help each student identify and pursue their personal interests and talents at which they are genuinely motivated to excel. Through required community service work --"Community Experience"--students are encouraged to pursue what interests them while getting involved whithin the community. Community Experiences have provided many opportunities and help build resumes, as well help assure students that what they want to do it right for them. It opens several doors, and allows students to experiment with several different jobs and get a taste for what it might be like to persue a career to the fullest extent.
  • Eight years later we have achieved our goals. The 2001 School Accountability Reports issued by the State of Colorado awarded us the second highest performance rating. In the rank ordering of schools, our students'scores earned us 32nd place out of 355 public high schools. Test scores for 2003 show New Vista students achieve at levels comparable to Boulder's other high schools. Although, test scores are just a glance at our capability, we excell, and look for ways to express what we love in areas around us. We have a greater focus, the focus of individual learning and doing our best to see what we love and wish to do in our future.
  • With regard to our second goal of supporting talent development in all students, we have had successes across the board. We have challenged exceptionally strong students and we have been able to succeed with some of the at-risk students who have come to us. From day one you get to decide what classes you want to take along with basic required courses, if there is something you are interested in right off the bat you get to study it right off the bat, no matter what grade you are in. When you are a senior you have to do a project that is equivalent to a master’s thesis in college. This is the culmination of what you have learned, and what you hope to learn in the future.
  • New Vista works for the self-motivated, independent, respectful, and mature. Alternative schools are starting to pop-up all over the country and are catering to a new kind of student. These schools have received a large amount of attention from some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country. They consider New Vista students "competitive candidates for acceptance." Not only will you get a well rounded education, you will get a crash course as who you are as a student, and how you react and contribute to the world. As you can tell, all the students are happy with the school. All of them. They have to be, because if they're not they get yelled at and copped out by the rest of the school. It's horrible...I mean wonderful. Get out while you still can.
  • Athletics: All the sports at New Vista are coed.
  • Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Student Clubs: There is a wide variety of clubs available at New Vista for students to be involved. Many are student created and led, and all are open to any interested student. Here are a few...
  • The Boulder Youth Body Alliance (BYBA) is a group of students dedicated to spreading eating disorder prevention and positive body image. They visit Boulder Valley middle schools and high schools to give presentations on the subject.
  • There is a Restorative Justice team of students trained in the restorative justice process and performs it in Boulder Valley schools. Restorative Justice is an alternative to suspension, and emphasizes the repairing of harms without removing a student from the environment, thus preventing the isolation and distance quite often associated with suspension, as well as halting any repairment. A circle is held with a trained facilitator and a co-facilitator as well as the victim, offender, an affected community member, and anyone else relevant to the situation.
  • The Equity Leadership Cohort is a group of diverse students dedicated to the spread of tolerance and covering topics of discrimination in discussions.
  • Some other clubs that have been popular in the past are Mountain Biking, Anime, and Chess.
  • If a student is interested in a club that New Vista doesn't have, they are encouraged to start one. All that has to be done is a staff member has to mentor the group, and the club can be established.
  • Community Experience: New Vista offers students many experiences. They are required to volunteer within the community for a minimum of four hours weekly. Volunteering goes towards school credit, and is a requirement to graduate. The experiences each student gains are invaluable. The mind of a young adult exposed to new ideas, filled with ambition, and introduced to new career options. Many students hold dreams of working as doctors, teachers, artists, musicians and more. Community experiences allow students to sample what their future careers might be like. Students have the freedom to switch their experience with every quarter, allowing them to try out as many possible businesses as they feel necesary. After four years of sampling different jobs, hopefully everyone will have an idea of what they do or do not want to do with their lives after high school.
  • Learning Unit Contract: In addition to students having the opportunity to receive credit for pursuing an interest via a Community Experience, a Learning Unit Contract (LUC) can be completed for credit as well. Although a mentor is required for each program, a main difference between a Community Experience and a Learning Unit Contract is that an LUC can be a way of pursuing an interest such as a sport or art one is currently interested, or to learn something brand new. An internship or volunteer work are not always components of an LUC, in contrast to a Community Experience. Furthermore, there is more academic work required of the student during a LUC, usually in the form of journaling, or another medium in which the student can communicate their experience. At the end of the LUC, the student will present to their advisory on the work they completed, which concludes the Learning Unit Contract.
  • Advisory: Students that attend New Vista all belong to an Advisory. This is a multi-age group of students with a Teacher as their personal guidance counselor. Students stay with this teacher for all of their new vista career.
  • Culminating Project: Seniors are required to produce an 120 hour project that reflects the students path. This can be anywhere from writing a book on how to build computers to starting a record label. The student works with a team of selected individuals to help them plan out the whole project. Many seniors lean what they want to do in their life from this and others learn what they don't want to do with their life. Culminating projects have ranged from getting a job to making an album to putting on a clown show.
