School Notes:
  • Silver Creek High School is a school located in Longmont, Colorado. Silver Creek's mascot is the raptor. The school is part of the Saint Vrain Valley School District. Silver Creek also is the host building for Universal High School. Silver Creek is one of the newest high schools in the Longmont area. Silver Creek is located at 4901 Nelson Road.
  • Classes: A wide range of classes are offered at Silver Creek. Standard "Core Classes" such as Math, English, Science, and Social Studies are taught at the school, as well as a small range of electives. Students can study many topics including cooking, music, art, literature, philosophy, and several other subjects. Silver Creek offers only French and Spanish as foreign languages, but may offer Mandarin Chinese as an online class during the 2007-2008 school year.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Silver Creek offers a very wide range of extracurricular activities including band, choir, newspaper, and a wide range of sports.
  • School Colors and Mascot: The official colors of Silver Creek are Maroon and Silver. The mascot is a Raptor, which is often depicted as an owl. This has led to controversies over students wearing Hooters shirts to school. Hooters shirts were eventually banned by the staff.
  • Scheduling Controversies: Silver Creek has had a history of controversies over the schedule of the school. One of the first of such controversies was the changing of the "access blocks." Students were originally given access blocks which they could use as study halls every Wednesday. Students who were performing well and were caught up were allowed to leave early. The school decided to switch over to having each student spend half of each block in each of their four blocks. Each block was ninety minutes so this meant that on Wednesday each of the four blocks allowed for 45 minutes of class and 45 minutes of study hall. Several of the teachers complained about the shortening of class on Wednesday and access was gradually phased out. In the start of the 2006 school year, the school switched from using its original block schedule where each class was 90 minues long and there were 4 classes per day to using an alternating block were there were still 4 ninety minute blocks, but they rotated by day were students would have "silver day" classes one day and "maroon day" classes. This was done so that core classes such as English, Math, Social Studies, and Science, which previously took half of a school year would require an entire year. This has been met with mixed reactions by students and teachers.
